In line with India’s philosophy of considering the whole world as one family, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing the CoWIN Global Conclave said that the CoWIN platform is a digital public good to the world to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and it would soon be available for all interested countries for usage.
CoWin, which is the tech backbone of India’s vaccination drive will be shared by the union government as a product “licensed by the central government”, which will be available to all “interested countries for free, until perpetuity”.
“The Central government has received interest from 76 countries thus far,” said chairperson of the Empowered Committee for the administration of the Covid-19 vaccine, Chairperson of the Empowered Committee for the administration of the Covid-19 vaccine, Dr R.S. Sharma said while adding that the only condition would be that the software should not be allowed to be used for commercial purposes.
Countries like Canada, Mexico, Nigeria, Panama, and Uganda, among others have shown interest in adopting the digital platform to combat COVID-19.
Notably, CoWin, which is one of the fastest tech platforms in the world, has achieved more than 20 crore registrations in the first four months of its launch on 16 January. As of 1 July, the platform garnered 35.4 crore registrations.
“Proud to say that Co-WIN, the fastest tech platform in the world, amassed 300+ million registrations in a mere 5 months. Has entertained over a billion HTTP requests on an average daily,” read one of the tweets of Dr. R.S. Sharma.
CoWin Global Conclave
At CoWin Global Conclave, India presented the indigenously developed CoWIN platform to the representatives from 142 countries. In line with India’s philosophy of considering the whole world as one family, the Prime Minister said that the CoWin platform is being made open source and available to any and all countries to combat COVID-19.
Digital approach also helps in tracking the usage of vaccination and minimizes wastage. The Prime Minister informed that through CoWin, India has administered 350 million doses of COVID vaccines, including nine million people in one day, a few days ago.
About CoWIN
CoWIN App is a digital platform developed by the Ministry of Health of India to help agencies keep a track of the vaccination programme as it allows Indian citizens to apply for a Covid-19 vaccine shot. The Centre had developed the CoWIN digital platform, to streamline the process of vaccination for various categories of beneficiaries across the country. Currently, CoWIN is working as the technological backbone of India’s vaccination drive. The app provides an effective rollout for scaling up the mechanism of the COVID vaccine distribution system.
