Code language was used for smuggling through diplomatic channels, Sivasankar tells ED

Kochi: Former IT Secretary M Sivasankar revealed that consulate employees used a code language for smuggling items through diplomatic baggage.

Sivasankar told the Enforcement Directorate that Swapna Suresh had revealed to him that ‘Consul is eating mangoes’ was the code used by the employees.

Sivasankar stated that Swapna informed him that Consulate officers smuggled many items other than gold through diplomatic channels. Swapna had contacted and asked Sivasankar to exert pressure on customs officers for the release of the baggage that contained gold. This was when Swapna told Sivasankar about the code language and other details.

Many items, including cosmetics, were smuggled through diplomatic channels. These items were then sold near Beemapally in Thiruvananthapuram, Sivasankar stated.
