To provide relief to the consumers amid high prices of tomatoes, the Centre has started selling the kitchen staple at a discounted rate of 90 rupees per kilogram in different parts of the country including Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida, Lucknow, Kanpur, Patna and Muzaffarpur.
It is being sold at a discounted rate through National Cooperative Consumers Federation-NCCF and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation.
A few more locations have been selected in Delhi- NCR, Lucknow and Kanpur where tomatoes will be sold today at a discounted rate of 90 rupees per kilogram.
The Centre had directed for immediate procurement of tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra for distribution in major consumption centres to check increasing retail prices.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has said that the cycle of planting and harvesting seasons and variation across regions are primarily responsible for price seasonality in tomatoes.
It added, apart from the normal price seasonality, temporary supply chain disruptions and crop damage due to adverse weather conditions and other factors often lead to sudden spikes in prices.
