Central government green signals manufacturing of Hydrogen fuelled vehicles

Thiruvananthapuram: Central government has given permission for the manufacture of Hydrogen fuelled vehicles. Central government has issued a draft notification for the manufacturing of Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The final order would be released by July end.

The major drawback of electric vehicles is that it takes 4-5 hours for the battery to be charged. However, the batteries of Hydrogen Fuel cell vehicles can be charged within minutes, similar to fuelling the petrol and diesel vehicles. Hydrogen refilling centres can be set up just like petrol pumps. These vehicles have more mileage than electric vehicles.

Though Hydrogen vehicles do not cause pollution, its cost of manufacturing is high. Experts claim that this will come down with the development of technology.

Electro chemical engines are use in hydrogen vehicles. Electricity is produced by pushing hydrogen into the electro chemical cell after combining it with oxygen.

Electric vehicles takes up the energy stored in the batteries of the vehicle. Hydrogen tanks can be installed in these vehicles without changing the shape.

Sreechitra college granted permission

Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram has been given permission by the central government to study about the feasibility and technicality of Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The first project was presented by Kerala.

Principal Dr K Prabhakaran Nair said that their aim is to develop technology to reduce the manufacturing cost of hydrogen, fuel cell.
