Cargo traffic on India’s inland waterways surges to all-time high of 145.5 million tonnes in 2024-25

Country’s National Waterways reached a record high of 145.5 million tonnes during the Financial Year 2024-25. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said this in a statement yesterday. It said that cargo traffic on National Waterways has recorded a compound annual growth rate of 20.86 per cent in the last fiscal year. The Ministry said that in Financial Year 2025, traffic movement registered a year-on-year growth of 9.34 per cent compared to the previous financial year. Five key commodities like coal, iron ore, iron ore fines, sand and fly ash constituted over 68 per cent of total cargo moved on National Waterways.
