The British Government is set to deport asylum-seekers of various nationalities to Rwanda. An appeals court yesterday refused to block the deportation. United Nations’ top refugee official said that this sets a dangerous precedent for migrants fleeing war and oppression.
The government said that the first deportation flight would go ahead today as scheduled.
In April, British Prime Minister Johnson announced the Deportation Policy as way to deter people from risking their lives by paying smugglers to take them to Britain in leaky inflatable boats. Migrant advocacy groups have attacked the policy as inhumane and illegal.
The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has lambasted the policy. He said that if the British Government is truly interested in protecting lives, it should work with other countries to target the people smugglers and provide safe routes for asylum seekers, not simply shunt migrants to other countries.
