The BJP today hit out at senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his comments against the Election Commission during his US visit and accused him of trying to defame Indian democracy abroad. Briefing media in New Delhi, party spokesperson Sambit Patra attacked Mr Gandhi for his remarks on the last Maharashtra assembly polls, saying the Congress leader should answer whether the Jharkhand assembly polls, where Congress and its allies won, were also compromised. He added that the BJP won 240 seats, while Congress only secured 99 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, yet, the Congress celebrated and claimed it as a loss for the BJP. Mr Patra underlined that it was possible because India has a free and fair election system. The BJP leader said Rahul Gandhi, who insults India abroad, must remember that he is facing corruption charges in the National Herald case and is out on bail on a bond of 50 thousand rupees.
Yesterday, while addressing members of the Indian diaspora in Boston, Mr Gandhi had alleged that the Election Commission is what he called compromised in India. Mr Patra also criticised Congress over the issue of alleged corruption related to the National Herald case. He alleged the money was collected through bogus advertisements and donations which went into the pockets of senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, who have been chargesheeted by the ED in this case.
