Bangladesh is witnessing a surge in Covid 19 cases with 26 people dying in the last 24 hours on Monday. It also reported 1773 new cases of corona infection in the country over the same period.
The death toll has gone up to 8571. The total number of people infected in the country now stands at 5.59 lakh.
The creeping rise in infection rate is reflected in the percentage of samples found corona positive over the period of the last 15 days. From a level of 2.87 percent on 28 February, the infection rate went up to 3.36 percent on March 2, 3.74 percent on March 3 and 3.87 percent on March 4. On Monday, March 15, the infection rate stood at 9.48 percent marking a very sharp increase from Feb. 28.
Director General of Health Services Prof ABM Khurshid Alam on Monday had warned of the looming danger if people continue to disregard Covid-19 safety measures. He pointed out that in the new wave mostly younger people are catching Covid 19. A large number of the people catching Covid 19 in the new wave require the ICU support.
Bangladesh is keeping the ICU beds ready in view of the rise in Corona cases in the country. It is also looking into the possibility of a new strain of virus affecting people in Bangladesh in the new wave.
Meanwhile, the mass vaccination for Covid 19 continues in Bangladesh. On Monday, a total of 87,860 people were vaccinated in the country. Till now 44.85 lakh people have received vaccination in Bangladesh.
