Bangladesh Health Minister Zahid Maleque has cautioned people to wear masks and maintain social distance as Covid 19 infection in the country is showing a rising trend. Speaking at an event in Dhaka on Thursday, the Health Minister expressed concern that people were ignoring health directives while visiting tourist spots and participating in social events.
Speaking about the vaccination programme, Zahid Maleque said that the third shipment of the vaccine from the Serum Institute of India (SII) is expected to arrive this month. Bangladesh will also receive 10.9 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from the COVAX-WHO facility in phases by June.
Covid 19 infection rate in Bangladesh has been rising in the last few days after showing a downward trend earlier. The infection rate per 100 samples collected has steadily gone up from close to 3 percent to 5.82 percent as on Thursday. The number of daily cases of Covid 19 infection have also crossed over 1000 on Thursday after remaining low for several weeks. More than 8500 people have died due to Covid 19 infection in Bangladesh till now.
Meanwhile,the mass Covid 19 vaccination programme is continuing in Bangladesh. According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), on Thursday 99,1784 people received the covid 19 vaccine on Thursday taking the total number of people vaccinated to over 42.18 lakh. However, over the last few days, the number of people getting vaccinated has also gone down from over 2.25 lakhs per day about 2 weeks ago to less than 1 lakh on Thursday.
