Close on the heels of granting approval for emergency use of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine on Tuesday, the Bangladesh government on Wednesday approved a proposal for the production of Chinese and Russian vaccines Sinopharm and Sputnik V in the country.
Briefing the media about the decision, Finance Minister Mustafa Kamal said that Bangladesh will also continue to pursue procurement of vaccines from the primary source Serum Institute of India (SII).
Earlier, in a virtual meeting convened by China on COVID cooperation on Tuesday, with the Foreign Ministers of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, it announced the decision to set up a China-South Asian Countries Emergency Supplies reserve. According to the joint statement issued after the meeting, China also agreed to support the participating countries to overcome the impact of COVID 19 on their economies through enhanced levels of economic cooperation and collaboration.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh reported 77 deaths and 2955 new COVID 19 infections on Wednesday. The death toll in Bangladesh due to COVID 19 now stands at 11,305 while the total number of infections is 7.54 lakh. The sample positivity rate has further declined in the country to 10.48 percent.
