The Supreme Court has asked the Centre, the Election Commission of India, senior Advocate Kapil Sibal and petitioners to submit their suggestions within a week on the composition of an expert body that will examine how to regulate freebies and submit a report. The top court said, there is a need for an apex body consisting of NITI Aayog, Finance Commission, ruling and opposition parties, the RBI and other stakeholders to make suggestions on how to control freebies by political parties during election campaigns. The Apex Court was hearing a plea against the practice of political parties promising freebies during elections. The bench, headed by CJI N. V. Ramana, said the panel is required to determine the pros and cons of freebies as these have a significant impact on the economy.
