President Droupadi Murmu has said that senior citizens are an important part of the family, and they act as an emotional pillar for the family. Addressing an event, Ageing With Dignity at Rashtrapati Bhavan today, the President said, the advice of senior citizens is important for the guidance of society. She expressed happiness that the Government of India has taken several steps to improve the safety, health and quality of life of senior citizens. President Murmu said, health coverage is also being given to people above 70 years under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
On the occasion, the President launched the senior citizens welfare portal and virtually inaugurated five senior citizen homes in Tawang (Arunachal Pradesh), Ankapally (Andhra Pradesh), Nainital (Uttarakhand), Wokha (Nagaland) and Vellore (Tamil Nadu). She also presented physical aids and assisted living devices to senior citizens under Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana.
Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr Virendra Kumar, Ministers of State B.L. Verma and Ramdas Athawale, and Secretary Amit Yadav were present at the event.
