Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new Pamban Rail Bridge in Tamil Nadu today, connecting Rameswaram to the mainland, on the auspicious occasion of Ram Navami.
The rail bridge which is an architectural marvel will be the Country’s first vertical lift sea bridge extending to two kilometres. The Prime Minister will arrive from the neighboring island nation of Sri Lanka at noon today.
All preparations are in full swing with two Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Dr. L. Murugan at the Rameswaram site since yesterday. Colourful lights illuminated the significant Bridge, an engineering marvel.
The bridge built at a cost of 550 Crore rupees carries a deep cultural significance to the Ramayana and links Rameswaram to the mainland.
The bridge is constructed with stainless steel reinforcement, high grade protective paint and fully welded joints. It is designed for dual rail tracks to accommodate future demands, and a special coating to protect against corrosion.
Prime minister will also lay the foundation stone and dedicate 8300 Crore rupees worth rail and road projects during the occasion. He will also flag off the Rameswaram Tambaram Express.
The Prime minister will also visit the Rameswaram Temple to pay obeisance on the special day.
The number of domestic tourists arriving in Rameswaram is over 20 Crore every year.
It is to be noted that the old Bridge which was constructed in 1914, was the only link between Rameswaram and the mainland and served as a cultural icon for over 100 years and was closed for traffic in 2022.
