Govt committed to safe internet, taking measures against online pornography: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

The government is taking several measures against online pornography and is committed to ensuring an open, safe, trusted and accountable Internet for its users. This was stated by Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written reply in Lok Sabha. The Minister said that the Information Technology Act, of 2000 provides punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material and material containing sexually explicit acts in electronic form. He said, the IT Act also has stringent punishment for publishing or transmitting material depicting children in sexually explicit acts in electronic form.

Referring to the IT rules, the Minister said, the intermediaries including social media intermediaries have to observe due diligence which includes removal of any content within 24 hours that prima facie exposes the private area of any individual, shows such individual in full or partial nudity or shows or depicts such individual in any sexual act or conduct. The Minister also highlighted the mechanism to deal with cyber crimes in the country.
