The government has implemented several measures to meet the increasing electricity demand during the summer months of April, May, and June. These proactive steps aim to address the surge in power usage, particularly during peak hours.
During April, the government’s initiatives, including directing imported-coal-based power plants to operate at full capacity and rescheduling planned maintenance of power plants to the monsoon season, helped meet the evening peak power demand of 224 GW.
To sustain this success and cater to the projected peak demands for May and June, additional measures have been introduced. Similar directives issued to gas-based power plants, alongside optimization of hydro power generation, have collectively contributed an extra 10 GW of power availability.
Furthermore, efforts to minimize outages and enhance thermal power plant performance have unlocked an additional 5 GW for the summer season. Wind power generation is also expected to increase by 4-5 GW compared to April.
With these measures in place and considering the anticipated above-normal monsoon forecast by the IMD (India Meteorological Department), authorities are confident in meeting the expected peak demands of 235 GW during the day and 225 GW during the evening in May, and 240 GW during the day and 235 GW during the evening in June.
