The Madras High Court has upheld the Tamil Nadu government’s order giving a 7.5 percent reservation for admission in MBBS and other medical courses for government school students. After hearing a batch of petitions against the order, the first bench led by chief justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari pronounced its verdict yesterday.
The court said, the state government has not stretched the reservation limit beyond the ceiling while issuing the order. It said that government school students are mostly at a disadvantageous position economically and socially than those studying in private or government-aided schools, adding, the inner reservation helps further the cause of social justice.
The High Court however asked the government to improve the standard of government schools in the next five years. The judgment says there should not be any need for the students to go to private coaching institutes to pass the NEET for medical admissions, rather, the school education itself should enable them to pass the entrance test.
Chief Minister MK Stalin and several leaders have hailed the judgment. Mr. Stalin said in the state Assembly yesterday that it will go a long way in ensuring opportunities for students from all sections of people.
