Wrestling U-23 World C’ships: By Clinching a Sliver, Shivani Pawar becomes part of India’s wrestling elite

Hailing from Madhya Pradesh and paving her way in the World Wrestling Championship, Indian wrestler Shivani Pawar was looked upon to create history in Belgrade to become the first Indian wrestler, man or woman, to win a gold medal at the U-23 World Championship. She reached the finals of the women’s 50kg division on Wednesday, i.e 3rd November 2021.

The 23-year-old bagged second place in the 50kg category after losing to the U.S.’s Emily Shilson in the final. Even though Shivani couldn’t make it to the gold, her dedication made her the third Indian woman wrestler to win a silver in the U-23 World Championship.

Emily Shilson wasn’t an easy opponent to beat. Reigning junior world champion, Shilson grabbed her chance when Shivani went for a leg attack which proved ineffectual; Emily got Shivani in a side headlock and pinned her less than 90 seconds into the first period. Although initially, it began well for the Indian wrestler as she took the first two points from Emily when she tried to strike early in the game with a leg attack, it was only later that the U.S. wrestler won for a victory by fall.

Yet again, even though Pawar missed the Gold to settle for a Silver medal at the Championship, she joined the illustrious list of Indians who have won a silver at the U-23 World Championship including bronze medalist Bajrang Punia and silver medalist Ravi Dahiya.

Shivani Pawar is looked upon as a great new find for Indian wrestling. With the extraordinary moves that stunned her opponents, Shivani used her counter-attacking style and impressed everyone with her fast, explosive bursts of speed, turning opponents attacks into her advantage. “It was her first big international tournament so she was a bit overawed while facing foreign wrestlers. In the first bout, she was hardly doing anything when we told her this is not the way to fight. You need to try and score points. We motivated her by saying there was nothing to fear,” said Mahavir Singh Bishnoi, one of the coaches with the Indian team in Belgrade.

Paving her way to becoming the best in Wrestling!

Hailing from a small district of Madhya Pradesh, Shivani Pawar comes from a farming family. Unlike any other wrestler, Pawar was into football in her school days and loved playing the game. But her coach thought that she could do better in wrestling and likewise suggested to the 12-year-old that she would be better off in wrestling. During a tournament in Chhindwara, former national champion turned coach Fatima Bano spotted the talent of Pawar and got her enrolled in a state programme. Pawar moved to Bhopal to join the MP Khel Academy.
