India takes over UNSC Presidency with focus on peacekeeping, maritime security & counterterrorism

India has assumed the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and is set to host major events in the domain of peacekeeping, maritime security, and counterterrorism during the month of August.

India’s message to the world

On the eve of India assuming the Presidency of the powerful 15-nation UN body, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti in a video message said,“ It is a singular honor for us to be presiding over the Security Council the same month when we are celebrating our 75th Independence Day.”

TS Tirumurti further talked about India’s agenda over the signature events in three key areas — maritime security, peacekeeping, and counterterrorism.

The Ambassador further said,” Peacekeeping is a topic “close to our hearts, given our own long and pioneering involvement” with peacekeeping, India will focus on the safety of peacekeepers, especially by using the latest technology and bringing the perpetrators of crimes against peacekeepers to justice.”

As a country that has been at the forefront in the fight against terrorism, India will continue to keep the spotlight on counterterrorism, Tirumurti added.

“New Delhi will continue to keep the spotlight on counter-terrorism. Further, India has been at the forefront to combat terrorism, we will continue to keep the spotlight on counter-terrorism. I would like to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S Jaishankar for counting to guide our permanent mission especially during our stint during the security council,” he asserted.

Assumption of office

India’s first working day as UNSC President will be on Monday, August 2 when T S Tirumurti will hold a hybrid press briefing in the UN headquarters on the Council’s plan of action for the month.

As per the schedule released by the United Nations, T S Tirumurti will also brief member states of the UN, who are non-members of the Council.

Taking over the presidency from France, this is India’s first Presidency during its 2021-22 tenure as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. India’s two-year tenure as a non-permanent member of the Security Council began on January 1 this year.

India will again take over as the President of the Council in December next year, the last month of its two-year tenure.
