The Election Commission of India has responded to the Trinamool Congress’ memorandum wherein the issue of attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee was raised by the party. The commission has said that it is unfortunate that it is full of insinuations and averments which questions the basis of creation and functioning of Election Commission.
Terming the incident unfortunate, the Commission stated that it deserves to be inquired into with promptitude and dispatch. It rejected the claim that the Commission has taken over the law and order machinery in the State in the name of conducting elections and appropriated the whole governance structure.
Election Commission further clarified that DGP was removed on the basis of recommendations given by the special observers and similarly, ADG (Law and Order) was also changed after considering application of mind by the special observers. The Commission said, it is not legally necessary or mandatory to consult with the State government after the announcement of elections because these are temporary measures for the period of election.
