Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has informed that Haryana has reduced instances of stubble burning this year by 25 per cent. Replying to a question in Rajya Sabha, Mr. Javadekar said that stubble burning in the month of October and November especially in the states of Punjab and Haryana causes serious smog conditions in and around the National Capital. He said that pollutants from stubble burning add to nearly two per cent to 40 per cent of the total pollution in the National Capital during this time.
Mr. Javadekar said that the Centre has spent a huge sum to procure nearly 40 thousand machines to mitigate the effect of stubble burning. He informed, however, these machines are not being used at their full efficiency at the moment. He added that incidences of stubble burning increased by 50 per cent in the state of Punjab this year where nearly 75 thousand such cases have been recorded.
