In Chushul’s craggy heights, ex-serviceman and locals supply essentials and water to Indian troops

Amid the ongoing standoff with China in eastern Ladakh, pictures of locals from Chushul and Merak who have volunteered to supply water and other necessities to the Indian Army are going viral on social media.

Praising these local volunteers Konchok Stanzin, executive councillor for education at Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council at Leh, said they are in service to the nation.

“Ex-Serviceman and Volunteers from #Merak village supplied essential local products and water to #IndianArmy deployed at #GurungHill, #KargyamGurGur, locals are service to the nation,” tweeted Stanzin.

‘Locals are service to the nation’

He further shared a picture of a local doctor from PHC, Chushul heading towards LAC with medicines and water on his back.

Calling them ‘soldiers without uniform’, he said that this is not the first time local equally stand with Army. “Local always stood with Indian Army whenever required. Whether #Monk, #Women, #Youth, #Employed, #Youth and #ExServicemen are voluntarily delivering their service,” he posted on Facebook.

Locals who offer their services as porters are hired by the Indian Army and get paid for the same, however, this time they have volunteered themselves to supply essentials to the servicemen who are holding and defending India’s position at the Black Top.

Meanwhile, Indian and Chinese military-level talks on Wednesday to de-escalate tension on the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh were “inconclusive”.

The militaries of both countries will again meet for further deliberation.

China wants to dislodge India from the heights

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops made a provocative military effort to dislodge Indian soldiers from their positions on the LAC on September 7 and also fired warning shots.

By occupying the heights, India is in an advantageous position as this allows it to dominate the Chinese Moldo garrison and the Spangur Gap under Chinese control.

On Tuesday, around 40 to 50 Chinese troops armed with spears, guns and sharp-edged weapons reached a few metres from the Indian Army positions at heights north of Rezang La in eastern Ladakh.
