38 Dead in North India Due to Rains, Yamuna Overflows Again

At least 18 killed in Himachal Pradesh rains; flood alert sounded in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab

Rains in the northern states claimed at least 38 lives and triggered landslides that left hundreds of people in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh stranded and several areas in Punjab, Haryana and Jammu flooded.

As many as 20 people have died in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi after a cloudburst hit Mori tehsil of the district, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said, according to ANI.

The Delhi government had announced a flood alert, asking people living in low-lying areas to move to safer places on Monday, 19 August. The water level of river Yamuna crossed the danger mark for a second consecutive day on Tuesday, 20 August.

Water level of river Yamuna rose to 205.94 meters, 0.61 meters above the danger level of 205.33 meters. Old Loha Pul (iron bridge) in Seelampur has been closed for pedestrians and vehicular traffic.
