Just 40 days after the new Galaxy A series became in India, Samsung reported that it has sold 2 million units. Now, 30 days later, that number has more than doubled to a total of 5 million units. The Chief Marketing Officer of Samsung India spoke with Reuters, saying that this generated a revenue north of $1 billion.
Samsung reportedly expects the revenue for the fiscal year 2019 to reach $4 billion. Considering that Samsungs revenue in India for the fiscal 2018 (which ended in March) was $5.3 billion, it seems that Samsung expects most of its sales to be generated by the new Galaxy A lines.
The new A-phones range in price from INR 5,300 ($75) to INR 29,000 ($410). Going by the numbers above, the average selling price over the first 70 days was INR 14,000 ($200).
Samsung claims it had 77% market share in Indias premium segment, which it defines as INR 30,000+. However, it is facing strong competition from Xiaomi and Oppo in the lower segments of the market. Based on data from Counterpoint, during the quarter ending in March Samsung shipped 23% of all smartphones in the country.
