Mumbai Rains: Close to 200 mm or more rain per day is likely between July 3, 5

Mumbai: One person was electrocuted and three were killed after being struck by lightning as rain pounded Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra for the fourth consecutive day, disrupting normal life and throwing air, road and rail traffic out of gear on Monday.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy spells in and around Mumbai for Tuesday and said rains are likely to continue for the next four days.

A tweet from Maajhi Mumbai, Aapli BMC@mybmc reads, “As per IMD updates close to 200 mm or more rain per day is likely between July 3 and July 5 which could hamper normal schedules. We will try our best to minimise discomfort & we request all to practice caution. We are just a tweet & call away Mumbai. Take care.”

In another tweet, the BMC said, “Mumbai, we understand it’s not been an easy Monday, but it’s also been a rain spell like never before – it’s the highest in a decade. 550 mm average of entire month of June has been exceeded in just last 48 hrs. We are truly trying our best. We request a bit of caution & patience.”

A 30-year-old man, Mohammed Ayub Kazi, was electrocuted after a short circuit occurred in his house at Shivaji Nagar, Govandi. He was rushed to the Rajawadi Hospital where he was declared dead. Three others, including a woman, were killed and two injured after being struck by lightning as they took shelter from heavy rain in a shed in Solapur on Monday afternoon.

Overnight heavy spells of rain inundated at least 137 spots in Mumbai, including Dadar, Sion, Matunga, Parel, Lalbaug, Senapati Bapat Marg, Wadala, Mahim, Santacruz, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Malad and Dahisar, virtually bringing traffic to a halt, causing huge snarls since daybreak. Many roads and streets were flooded. Visibility was a problem, exacerbated by the appearance of potholes. Flights to and from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were delayed by 35 minutes owing to heavy rain and low visibility.

The one bright spot in the entire situation was the operation of Metro Line One, which remained unaffected by the rains. However, as people surged towards metro stations, to manage the sudden influx, crowd control measures were put in place.

Seema, a regular metro commuter from Chakala to Andheri said there were rumours that the metro services had stopped. However, it later turned out, this was to manage movement of travellers. A source said, “A large number of people left their offices early and there were huge crowds. To avoid chaos at the station or platform, necessary steps were taken, which included slowing down the entry of people into the station.”

Moreover, trains on Western and Central’s Main and Harbour lines were delayed by 25-30 minutes. More than 100 train services were cancelled on all three lines. Flooding on tracks at Kurla, Sion, Wadala, Thane and Kalwa led to delay in train services, leaving lakhs of officegoers and students stranded.

On the Western Railway (WR), some material from ongoing construction work fell and broke the overhead electric wires at Marine Line, hitting services on the slow line between Churchgate-Mumbai Central around 8 am. “Restoration was taken up on a war footing and services were restored at 11 am, while heavy rains led to cancellation of several outstation services today,” said WR officials.

In view of the heavy rains in Palghar district and a rail track being damaged near Lonavla in Pune, 17 long-distance trains of the Western Railway (WR) and more than 10 of the Central Railway (CR) were cancelled in the morning. “Due to submergence of rail tracks at a few places in Palghar, some trains were also short-terminated,” said a WR official.

Meanwhile, a goods train derailed in the early hours of Monday in the Western Ghat section between Karjat and Lonavla, affecting the movement of several long-distance trains going towards Pune and western Maharashtra. “Some trains were also short-terminated and others diverted via Kalyan-Igatpuri-Manmad section. The shuttle train services between Mumbai and Pune were also affected,” said a CR official.

TWO-DAY RAIN DECADE HIGH

Since Sunday night, it has rained 540 mm – the highest over a two-day period in a decade; In June, average rainfall was 515 mm. This time, we got 540 mm in just two days.

High tide at 11:11 am today
