From new faces to appointments in poll-bound states, here’s making sense of BJP’s new national team

Bharatiya Janata Party president JP Nadda late last week put in place a new team comprising 12 national vice presidents, eight national general secretaries, three national joint secretaries and 13 national secretaries.

Many of the changes reflect the BJP’s efforts to prepare for the upcoming polls in key states, including Bihar, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala.

Rejig of the BJP’s national team, including of spokespersons, has some key takeaways:

Reshuffle on the cards?

Four key national general secretaries have been dropped from the BJP president’s team. These include Ram Madhav, P Muralidhar Rao, Saroj Pandey and Anil Jain. However, there may be a bigger plan at work as reports suggest a reshuffle of the Union Cabinet could be on the cards and the exclusions may have been done with a purpose.

Key appointments in poll-bound states

Several key appointments have been made in poll-bound states of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Kerala. For example, BJP leader and former aide of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Mukul Roy, has been elevated as vice president. The move could play an important role in the BJP’s efforts to challenge the TMC in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Elections. Another former TMC MP Anupam Hazra has been rewarded with the post of national secretary.

Another key state going to polls in the near future (2022) includes Uttar Pradesh and the new Nadda team has 11 faces from there. Rajkumar Chahar, the MP from Fatehpur Sikri, will be the head of the Kisan Morcha and the appointment comes at a time when the party is defending three key farm laws brought in by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.

Kurmi leader Rekha Verma, an MP, has been made the national vice president. In appointments from UP, caste representation has been kept in mind with appointees representing Brahmins, Thakurs, Vaishyas, Muslims, and OBCs. Another noteworthy appointment is of Rajesh Agarwal, an ex-UP minister, who has been made treasurer in the national panel.

An RSS leader, Shiv Prakash from Lucknow, is also on the team as co-general secretary (organisation).

New faces bring firepower

An unexpected appointment in Nadda’s team is of Abdullakutty from Kerala. Previously a member of the CPI(M) and Congress, Abdullakutty joined the BJP in 2019. He was quickly appointed as the vice-president of the BJP’s Kerala unit. It may be recalled that the politician from Kerala was expelled by the CPI(M) after he had praised Narendra Modi and his Gujarat model of development when the talks of the BJP leader being made the PM candidate had started doing the rounds during the UPA-2 regime. Party sources said it’s Abdullakutty’s minority background that may help the BJP gain foothold in the southern state.

Bengaluru MP Tejasvi Surya, meanwhile, has been made the head of the party’s youth wing (Yuva Morcha) in place of Poonam Mahajan. Surya’s appointment is interesting as he has turned out to be a firebrand youth leader and a proponent of the Hindutva ideology.

Taking BJP’s voice to the people

Meanwhile, with an aim to reach out to the people and make them understand the BJP’s view, Nadda has nearly doubled the number of spokespersons in his team to 23. The list includes three women spokespersons as well.

Some other noteworthy appointments

* D Purandareshwari (Andhra Pradesh), CT Ravi (Karnataka), Dilip Saikia (Assam), Dushyant Kumar, a Dalit MP, and Tarun Chugh (Punjab) have been made national general secretaries of the BJP.

* Bhupendra Yadav, Arun Singh and Kailash Vijayvargia, who were key pillars of ex-president Amit Shah’s team, have been retained as national general secretaries of the party.

* BL Santosh from Karnataka will be the BJP general secretary (Organisation).

* Rajya Sabha MP Anil Baluni, said to be a close confidante of PM Modi and HM Amit Shah, will continue as BJP’s media cell head as well as the chief spokesperson. Amit Malviya, meanwhile, will also remain the IT cell head.
