A total of eight hundred 24 Lakh Metric Tonnes of free foodgrains has been distributed under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana with a total subsidy outlay of around two lakh 79 thousand crore rupees as on the 31st of July.
This information was given in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today by Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti.
The Minister said that in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak in March 2020, the Department had started the distribution of additional and free-of-cost foodgrains to around eighty crore beneficiaries under the scheme. She said, it helped to ameliorate the food security hardships faced by the poor and the needy due to the unprecedented outbreak of the pandemic.
