Part I – People’s polity that we had!
As the first decade of 21st century is about to go past, the Indian polity has nothing much to offer to the people of the country – either in terms of the performance or in the promises they hold out for future.
We do not want to be pessimistic. But we are because, our leaders today have miserably failed to give us anything to cheer; anything to hail; anything to praise. People have failed too since they are too busy working for their own selfish ends rather than contributing anything for the common good. Let us not forget that these ‘people’ are ‘we’ and nobody else.
The greatest ‘achievement’ of the modern day leaders is that they have made the whole populace of the world a stooge or a minion unable to look beyond the day’s meal; beyond the moment of reality that effectively puts to rest any aspiration to aim big.
People are made to believe that to have a ‘comfortable’ living of a guaranteed meal and fairly decent clothing is the maximum and the very best that they are entitled to in their lives. So the show goes on!
India cannot be different from rest of the world particularly when we speak of globalization, international co-operation, ‘world community’ and world Peace. It is a sin or crime to try to live a ’luxurious’ life when many others are starving for food. And mind it – this rule applies only to the general public and the leaders do not ever come under this category. They belong to a very unique race altogether and on any given day they are more equal than any of us or all of us put together.
Indian polity has not undergone a sea change but it certainly is not what it used to be in the days of Gandhi, Nehru, Patel or Bose. We do not deserve to have leaders like Rajaji, Kamaraj, Kakkan or Jeeva (all from Tamilnadu – my home state).
Similarly, people of every state in India had their own leaders who would take care of the basic, legitimate needs of the common man. These leaders were simple, clean and caring.
It all changed in 1960s and 70s. Tamilnadu paved the way for the present day personalized politics by defeating Kamaraj the great on his home turf. That was the end of the people’s polity – in Tamilnadu, in India too. I do agree that every other State in India can ‘rightfully’ claim their role in the process of degradation. As one from TN, I take ‘credit’ for us.
Democratic values were given a decent burial and the voters were but sheep running behind the self styled leaders. By the end of the 20th century, it was all over for the noble people in public life. The political spectrum in its entirety was magnanimously gifted away to the ‘heirs’ and hypocrites and the resultant effect is very much before us to see, to experience ourselves.
In the given circumstances, it would only be too good if the present day leaders do not at least harm the people so much as to make their day to day life miserable. Again, nobody can guarantee it; we can only wish that we go ‘untouched’ by big plans of the rulers.
As we usher in to the next decade, what can we expect? Where do the Indian political parties stand today?
